the beginning of the pocket collection, sort of.

it started early. cos it needed to. first: sewing with wire. they've turned out a bit bigger than pocket size but thats ok. need to make lots more for the idea to work. (more made since the picture got taken: total: 3 people, 2 fishes, and 1 bird)

the thing about paper mache, which happens after the wire sewing bit, is its got a kind of a wierd or important process bit to it.

if you make paper mache using of strips of newspaper -thats the most well known way, then its like wrapping with bandages, you get all the gloopy -flour and water- glue, but you gotta use boiling water in the beginning cos that does something to the particles in the flour and makes it stronger, then you sort of cover individual strips of paper with the glue and then you wrap it round the wire sewed sculpture thing. its kind of wierd.it makes you think differently, and the sculpture isnt really just a thing, at that stage. its about deconstruction and reconstruction and fixing.

there is another method, and that is to buy a paper shredder, and shred newspaper up into little bits and mix it with the glue and it turns into a kind of pulp which is good for moulding. thats a lot like cement, you use it to build up areas, its different to the bandage method and the thinking is different too.

then after all of that, you douse it in lots of colour and maybe some words, and then you almost drown it in envirotex lite, which is a kind of thick clear varnish that protects it, but you have to make sure that all the glue is dry, and the paint.
paper mache can be as strong as wood, you could even make a house out of it, if you did it properly and took a long time over it.
thats all way too long for explaining a picture, you can just look at the picture if you like. if you got this far in the first place...
